Computer tip: Windows 8.1 app from store doesn’t open

When you click on an application you got from the Windows 8.1 Store and it won’t open? You click on the application, but the application just reloads the Start screen.

Open the registry editor. Check that the All Applications Packages group has READ permissions to each of the following registry paths.

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\DRIVERS
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
  • HKEY_USERS

Go to c:\program files [not c:\program files (x86)]. Right click and select Properties. Select the Security tab. On the Security tab click on the Advanced button.

On the Advanced Security Settings screen verify that ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES has Allow Permissions Read & execute for This folder, subfolders and files.

Note that if you are unable to make the changes to the registry or to the folder permissions to Program Files, it is most likely that this problem is caused by a Group Policy applied to your computer that prevents Windows Store Apps from launching. If true, contact your local support people.
