The death of the music channel

Canada’s MuchMusic Video Awards were held recently. I am wondering if they really should bother or is it a away to fill up their schedule in the summer.

Unsure about MTV in the US and elsewhere, but MuchMusic barely has any videos shown during prime time. They are too busy putting on shows that have little or nothing to do with music except maybe for the music during the opening and closing credits. [How does the CRTC allow this?] Those shows [past and present] include The Vampire Diaries, The Simpsons, Conan, Degrassi and The Cleveland show plus movies that have barely any music either (Scream 3, National Lampoon’s European Vacation, etc.].

They managed to recruit D-list celebrities Kendall and Kylie Jenner [what exactly have they done in life other than be a part of the greater Kardashian clan] as host of the show that featured very few names I would recognize [and probably you].

They always try and get a big international act to appear and this year it was Lorde. Clearly hot right now … but we’ll see in a few tears.

[BTW, when she was at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in April, her pink-ish pant suit and her nervousness did not go well while she sang the Nirvana track All Apologies. At least the three other singers did a credible job and wore outfits more suitable to the type of music.]

Sure, artists continue to release music videos but you will find them on YouTube and you can watch them at any time and as many times. They should have an award show.

As for my comment filling up the schedule, the two hour broadcast will be shown 17 times on MuchMusic during its first week and I’m sure more after. How many times can you watch the same thing? [And there is something known as a PVR.  Record it once and watch it whenever you want to – and skip the commercials.]
