Seems the US military has finally come close to perfecting a meal ready to eat [or MRE in military jargon] version of the pepperoni pizza. Actually two versions: pork and a turkey flavor for those who don’t eat pork.
Researchers at a U.S. military lab in Massachusetts are closing in on a recipe that doesn’t require any refrigeration or freezing. Pizza has been one of the top requests by soldiers in the field who eat MREs. More like the Holy Grail. MREs aren’t used at military bases [and the like] as soldiers there can have regular food but for soldiers in the field who don’t have the time to warm up some pasta or something.
Those few who have tested it says it is probably the closest you can get to pizza and have given it the thumbs up.
Efforts by researchers were long stumped because moisture in cheese, tomato sauce, and toppings migrated to the dough over time, resulting in soggy pizza that would cause disease-causing bacteria and the perfect conditions for mold grow. After playing around, they have found the right combination to make the MRE both editable and long lasting. No refrigeration and can withstand 80 degrees.
Spaghetti is one of the original MREs that came out in 1981 after canned food were replaced by them. Vegetarian tortellini is another popular choice.
Wonder when the bacon double cheeseburger and a rib steak will be available.
