Computer Tip: Disabling Windows Server 2012’s IE Enhanced Security Configuration

In this short tip, way back when Windows Server 2003 was introduced, they also introduced a feature to secure Internet Explorer with its enhanced configuration feature. This had to be uninstalled in order to allow full Internet access with Internet Explorer.

In Windows Server 2012, Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration [IE ESC] is in the Server Manager.

  • To change the settings, go into the Server Manager. In the left pane, select Local Server.
  • In the right pane, in the Properties section, go to the middle “grouping”.
  • In the third item in the second column, you should see the option for IE Enhanced Security Configuration.
  • When you click on the link for On, you can disable [or enable] for administrators as well as users.

Note: You generally should not disable the feature. At the same time, you shouldn’t be using a server to surf the Internet!
