Computer Tip: Optical drive not recognized in Windows 8.x

After you install Windows 8.x, you may find the CD/DVD drive is not recognized. To fix the problem:

  • Run an elevated Command prompt (as an Administrator). Type cmd in Windows 8 Modern UI and press cltr+shift+enter
  • Type in the following and press the Enter key:

reg.exe add “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0” /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

Reboot the system. Drive should be available.

[As usual read my Notes page when working with the registry.]

Hi Paul, select/click on the Search charm and you should see the “Apps”. Under “Windows System” you should see the small “Command Prompt” tile. Right click on the tile and choose “Run as Administrator” below it.
