Computer Tip: How to install .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8

Since Windows 8 came out 6 months ago, one common question is how to install .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 8. This is quite simple when you have internet access. It is in the Windows Features panel. [Note: You can’t download it from the Microsoft site. Windows 8 uses a specific installation.]

But let’s say you had no internet access. The solution emerges with the Windows 8 ISO and DISM.

  1. Create a folder under your system drive called net35 [example: C:\temp\net35].
  2. Mount your Windows 8 ISO DVD file or insert your DVD.
  3. In the Windows 8 DVD, copy the folder “sources\sxs\” into the newly created net35 folder [c:\temp\net35]. Use either xcopy, robocopy or drag and drop – but make sure sub-folders are also copied.
  4. Use DISM to enable the .NET Framework 3.5 feature by entering the following command in an elevated command prompt:

DISM.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:c:\temp\net35 /LimitAccess

With no internet access, .NET Framework 3.5 should now be installed.
