Microsoft pulls security update MS13-036 (KB2823324)

Microsoft has recalled KB2823324 in Windows Vista and Windows 7 today. It was included as part of the security update for MS13-036 [“Vulnerabilities in Kernel-Mode Driver Could Allow Elevation of Privilege”].

The reason given is that systems may fail to recover from a reboot or applications fails to load after the security update is applied. Microsoft is investigating but has pulled the update from all sources.

If you have installed the application, Microsoft recommends removing the security update. A reboot will be required.

The update is related to the file NTFS.SYS.

See Microsoft KB.

[Update 2013/04/17:] While the security update has been pulled for Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008, the issue seems to be affecting only Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 at this time.

[Update 2013/04/18:] Microsoft has release an emergency bootable disc in case you have problems removing the security update here. Note that only a 32-bit version has been released.

[Update 2013/04/23:] See updated blog for the re-release information.
