Difference between Surface versions with Windows 8 RT and Windows 8 Pro

Here is a rundown in the difference between Windows 8 Surface RT and Windows 8 Pro.

The following are common between the two:

  • Touch enabled screen technology.
  • Fluid, intuitive, and easy-to-use interface design that you can easily customize.
  • Internet Explorer 10.
  • Applications like games, mail, calendar, photos, messaging, and SkyDrive with many more applications that are available at the Windows Store.

Some features are included in Windows RT only:

  • Device encryption.
  • Windows Update and Windows Defender.
  • The PC can turn on instantly with connected standby.
  • Office Home & Student 2013 RT Preview are preinstalled.
  • Requires you to install applications via Microsoft store.
  • You can only install printers, mice, keyboards, and other devices that are certified for Windows RT.

Some features are included in Windows 8 Pro only:

  • Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player.
  • HomeGroup creation (you can join an existing HomeGroup but you can’t create a new one).
  • Use Remote Desktop.
  • Join a Windows domain [which also means that they can be centrally managed].
