Computer tips: speed up Windows 7 a bit and enable hidden shares

Here are two little tips.

Assuming you have loads of memory to spare [you have 4GB or more of RAM in the system], the following registry fix will load Windows 7 kernel into RAM when the computer starts up. This will slighly improve the speed of the system.

In the registry editor:

  1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
  2. If not exist [or if does modify] the dword DisablePagingExecutive and assign it the value of 1.

In the second tip, in some rare cases, mapped drives may not appear in Windows 7. The following will correct the situation.

In the registry editor:

  1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
  2. If not exist [or if does modify] the dword EnableLinkedConnections and assign it the value of 1.

These changes may or may not work in other versions of Windows. A rebooot for either are required.

As usual, when editing the registry, back it up first. Still, use this information at your own risk.
